Portion Control

April 13, 2010

I have a huge responsibility when cooking meals. I not only want to make delicious food but offer the right amount to my family. So, what is the right amount? Should we eat until we’re full?

I have found that 1 is plenty. When we eat dinner everyone doesn’t need 3 pieces of bread and butter or 2 steaks each. One will fill us up!

WebMD has a great interactive website to help keep portions appropriate. http://www.webmd.com/diet/healthtool-portion-size-plate

Below is a quick list that I can easily remember when I’m in the kitchen!
• 1 piece of lunch meat = CD
• Beef or chicken = deck of cards
• Fish = checkbook
• Hamburger = deck of cards
• French fries = baseball (about 10 fries)
• Pizza = 2 $1 bills
• Baked potato = computer mouse
• Cheese = 3 dice
• Butter, margarine, mayo or salad dressing = poker chip
• Brownie or piece of chocolate = dental floss
• Cookie = 2 poker chips
• Ice cream = light bulb
• Muffin = hockey puck

How are you helping your family maintain their portions?
